About The Passion of Joan of Arc
On Monday 19 September, we’re screening Carl Theodor Dreyer’s classic silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc in the Globe Theatre, accompanied by a new live score.
Why should you see the film? Well, The Passion of Joan of Arc was voted the 9th best film in the BFI / Sight & Sound critics poll of the best films of all time.
Jane Giles said of it:
“Joan was and remains an unassailable giant of early cinema, a transcendental film comprising tears, fire and madness that relies on extreme close-ups of the human face…”
Steve Rose, in designating the film 22nd place in the Guardian’s run-down of the all-time best arthouse films, said:
“So extraordinary and otherworldly is this film’s power, you could believe you were watching the actual trial of Joan of Arc, rather than just actors recreating it for the camera… it’s a bracingly modern treatment of a historical subject.“
