Designing costumes for Macbeth
Costume Designer Joan O’Clery shares some of her ideas and inspirations for our upcoming production of Macbeth.
The costumes for Macbeth are not set in any specific time period. Instead they draw on the tumbling steel wire elements from Ciaran Bagnell’s set design representing the chaos and tangle of nature and war.
The magical and supernatural elements are operated by the Weird Sisters who grow out of a discarded pile of sculptural battle detritus- reflected in their costumes.
The wirey organic chaos becomes orderly in the costumes of the Royals, Duncan, Malcolm and Donalbain who have highly ornate embroidered uniforms - a style Macbeth takes on when he too becomes the King.
Macbeth will play in the Globe Theatre from Saturday 18 June - Saturday 1 October. Find out more about the production and book tickets.
