Cast Announced for Thomas Tallis

We have some exciting casting news for Jessica Swale’s Thomas Tallis, which returns to the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse after its triumphant run last year.

Jessica’s exploration of the life and work of the celebrated English composer follows him through the religious and political shifts of four Tudor monarchies. Directed by Adele Thomas, the production stars Katy Stephens, Brendan O’Hea, Simon Harrison and Guy Amos. It also features six members of The Sixteen.

Katy Stephens is a new addition to the original cast and will play Elizabeth I/Queen Catherine. Katy currently plays Clytemnestra inThe Oresteia, and appeared last year in Julius Caesar and in Howard Brenton’s Doctor Scroggy’s War. She is also an Associate Artist with the RSC.

Brendan O’Hea returns to play the titular character of Thomas Tallis. Brendan is currently appearing in The Oresteia and Measure for Measure, with other recent work for the Globe being A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Knight of the Burning Pestle and The Duchess of Malfi.

Simon Harrison also reprises his role in Thomas Tallis as Henry VIII after his turn as Orlando in the Globe’s much-loved As You Like It this summer. Other work with Shakespeare’s Globe has included roles in The Changeling, The Comedy of Errors, The Last Days of Troy and Henry VI Parts 1, 2 and 3.

As a member of the inaugural Globe Young Player’s company, Guy Amos is no stranger to the stage of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse. Along with his performance of King Edward VI in the original run of Thomas Tallis, Guy has appeared in Dido Queen of Carthage and The Malcontent, along with Globe Education’s Research in Action series.

After 35 years of worldwide performance and recording, The Sixteen is recognised as one of the world’s greatest ensembles, having cultivated a unique reputation for performing early English polyphony, masterpieces of the Renaissance and a diversity of 20th and 21st-century music under conductor and founder, Harry Christophers CBE. Members of The Sixteen performing in Thomas Tallis are Kirsty Hopkins, Alexandra Kidgell, William Purefoy, Jeremy Budd, Tom Raskin and Ben Davies.

Globe Musician Arngeir Hauksson completes the company on the lute, having performed with The Sixteen, and on the Globe stage, on numerous occasions.

Thomas Tallis opens in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse on 22 October. Return tickets available only, for more information visit our website.
